POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW
Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Royal Brisbane Hospital, Brisbane, Australia

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere, with programs in areas such as cellular and molecular sciences, epidemiology and population health, cancer biology, biotechnology, infectious diseases and vaccine development.

Applications are invited for a Protein Biochemist / Enzymologist to join the Scabies Laboratory at QIMR as a Research Officer. Our NHMRC-funded project is aimed at defining the biological role of Scabies Mite Cysteine Proteases and Serpins which in conjunction with structural studies may allow us to design inhibitors that interfere with their function. This will provide the foundation for the development of therapeutics and vaccines that target this debilitating disease. We have collaborative linkages with relevant experts in enzymology, structural biology and synthetic chemistry in place in order to achieve this.

Applicants should possess a PhD, a demonstrated proficiency to carry out high quality research, and a proven track record of research achievement. A significant level of background knowledge and working experience within enzymology, preferable in protein biochemistry of proteases is definitely required. Practice in protease assay methods and enzyme kinetics would be an advantage. Familiarity in structural biology is of great interest. Molecular biology skills and experience in protein expression and purification are desirable, but not essential.

The researcher will be expected to undertake an original research project. Although guidance will be given as to the direction of the research and in molecular biology and protein expression techniques, you will be expected to contribute significantly to the development of the project. While our present team provides expertise in parasitology, molecular biology and protein expression your role will focus on the enzymology aspects of the project. You must be ready to communicate the results of the project, both verbally (at internal laboratory meetings and external meetings) and in writing (assisting the preparation of manuscripts for scientific journals). Hence a sound knowledge of spoken and written English is essential.

Salary range is $60,412 to $64,848 per annum commensurate with qualifications and experience. Attractive salary packaging and superannuation option also apply. This a full-time appointment for 3 years with the possibility of review subject to funding availability.

Applications should include curriculum vitae, proof of qualifications and the names and contact details of three professional referees.
